What is Smoke-Free Gaston County?

In 2006, a report from the U.S. Surgeon General confirmed what public health and   cancer specialists had suspected for decades: Secondhand smoke is hazardous to your health. In fact, the report confirmed, even small amounts of exposure to secondhand smoke can cause heart disease, respiratory infection, or even cancer.

The report further confirmed that there is no amount of exposure to secondhand smoke that is safe. What this means is that if you live with a smoker, ride in a car with a smoker, hang out in smoky rooms or eat in restaurants that allow smoking, that you are at risk of developing these diseases, even if you sit in the non-smoking section.

To help Gaston County citizens reduce their exposure to secondhand smoke, we are encouraging restaurants to consider going smoke-free, and we're thanking those that do. We also want to provide concerned citizens with a place to find out whether their favorite restaurant is smoke-free, and to find out how to encourage them to go smoke-free if it's not.

Take a look around our site. You'll find information on the dangers of secondhand smoke, a listing of smoke-free restaurants in Gaston County, and how you can talk to your favorite restaurant about going smoke-free. Click contact us if you'd like more   information.

Thank you for taking an active role in protecting your health!
