Parks and Recreation

Senior Programs

Gaston County Parks & Recreation strives to provide a wide variety of senior programs for adults ages 60 and over.  These programs and activities are located at various sites throughout Gaston County.  Enrollment for all programs is on-going.  You can join at any time!  All programs are FREE to Gaston County Seniors, ages 60 and up, unless otherwise stated.  Programs are subject to change, please call 704-922-2160 for more information.  

Exercise & Fitness

  • Add Health to Our Years (AHOY) - This exercise program is great for seniors of all fitness levels.  AHOY meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00-11:00am at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1201 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia.
  • Blood Pressure Checks - Maintain your good health by having your blood pressure checked by trained medical personnel.  Blood Pressure Checks are from 1:00-3:00pm, the first Wednesday of each month, at the Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Dallas.
  • Jazzercise - Join this group for a fun workout to music, led by a certified Jazzercise instructor.  The workout can be modified to your level of fitness.  Jazzercise meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00-3:00pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1201 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia.
  • Line Dancing - Learn steps needed to begin line dancing or advanced steps if you are experienced.  This is an enjoyable way to get a great workout.  Line Dancing meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00-4:00pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1201 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia.
  • Seniorcise - This program offers a variety of exercises to all fitness levels.  The program is designed for men and women to enhance strength, balance and cardio vascular.  Seniorcise meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00-10:00am at Flint Groves Baptist Church, 2017 E. Ozark Avenue, Gastonia.
  • Use It or Lose Exercise Class - The name says it all!  This exercise group performs a variety of exercise routines; all can be modified to varying fitness levels.  Use It or Lose It meets Tuesday and Thursdays, 10:00-11:00am in the Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Dallas.

    

Creative Arts

  • Crochet Club - Bring your crochet work and join the group for a morning of fellowship.  Crochet Club meets on Wednesdays, from 10:00am-12:00pm at Bradley memorial Methodist Church, 1425 West Franklin Blvd., Gastonia.
  • Painting Club - All painters are invited to bring their projects and paint with this group.  You will enjoy the group whether you are a beginner or experienced painter.  Painting Club meets on Mondays from 10:00am-3:00pm, at the Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Dallas.
  • Quilting Club - Create beautiful works of art with other quilters.  Quilting Club meets on Wednesdays, from 1:00-3:00pm, at the Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Dallas.
  • Senior Memories - Aspiring writers are invited to join their peers in this group.  Poets, novelists, and short story writers will enjoy the company of their fellow writers.  Senior Memories meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, from 11:00am-until, at the Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Dallas. Participants should bring their own lunch.

Recreational Opportunities

  • Duplicate Bridge Club - This club requires a basic understanding of bridge.  Duplicate Bridge Club meets on Tuesdays, from 1:00-4:00pm, at the Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Dallas.

Senior Special Events & Activities

  • Monthly Evening Dances - Dance the night away with music by a live band.  Dances are held from 7:00-10:00pm on the second Friday of each month.  Come join the fun at the Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Dallas.  Cost is $3 for singles, $5 for couples.
  • Senior Citizens Council - The Senior Citizens Council is made up of representatives from Senior clubs all over Gaston County.  Members network with other club leaders, sharing ideas for programs and resources for Council representatives to use in their own clubs.  All senior clubs in Gaston County are encouraged to participate.  Senior Citizens Council meets quarterly, the fourth Tuesday of January, April, July, and October, from 9:00-11:00am, at the Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Dallas.
  • Senior Valentine Party - This annual event features contests for couples married the longest, with the most children & grandchildren, most recently engaged, and most recently married.  The Party includes great entertainment, refreshments, and fun for all.  Call Gaston County Parks & Recreation at 704-922-2160 for date and time.
  • Senior Health & Fitness Day - Join us for this annual celebration of healthy lifestyles.  The event features free health screenings, fitness and nutrition information, give-aways, displays, and more.  Call Gaston County Parks & Recreation at 704-922-2160 for date and time.
  • Senior Holiday Celebration - Ring in the holidays with food, fun, fellowship, and entertainment at our annual celebration.  Call Gaston County Parks & Recreation at 704-922-2160 for date and time.
