More Animals Up For Adoption

Changes to Gaston County 's Animal Control Policy will allow more animals to be put up for adoption. In 1999, strict guidelines were imposed on adoptions due to increasing numbers of reported rabies cases. The number of rabies cases has been declining and The Gaston County Board of Commissioners recently approved a recommendation by the Animal Control Task Force to eliminate proof of a rabies vaccination as criteria for allowing an animal to be adopted. Now anyone adopting an animal will be required to sign a waiver in the event the pet should become sick.

Animal Control Director, Reggie Horton says he expects a big increase in the number of animals up for adoption at the shelter. However, he is quick to remind people that all dogs, cats and ferrets are required by law to have an up to date rabies vaccination. Horton also adds that while this will significantly reduce the number of animals euthanized each year, the best way to prevent pet overpopulation is to make sure pets are spayed or neutered.
